Farm Boy

Age: 9+

Published: October 2011

ISBN: 9780007450657

Format: Paperback

The magical sequel to ‘War Horse’, soon to be a major motion picture.

Joey was the last working horse on the farm, and the apple of Grandpa’s eye. In War Horse, Joey was sent away from the farm to be a warhorse in WWI. Grandpa had joined the cavalry in order to find, and fight, with Joey. Farm Boy brings us forward fifty years with Grandpa not only telling his grandson, Joey’s story but also a ‘shameful secret’ which he has held for years…

The story is set in Iddesleigh in Devon and lovingly evokes the bonds between farm and farmer; grandson and grandfather. The spirit of rural life is superbly captured in both Michael Morpurgo’s writing and Michael Foreman’s illustrations.

Beech Class at St Louis Primary, Newmarket says:

Beech Class thought that ‘Farm Boy’ was a great story because it had lots of interesting detail about the characters, the horses and the setting in Devon.  We also like Mr Morpurgo’s writing style because he writes as if the characters are talking directly to the reader and he helps us learn about relationships between people but also between people and animals.

We thought the most exciting part was when Mr Medlicott and the Corporal had the ploughing race.  We wanted Joey and Zoey to win!  The only thing we found that make the book harder to read was that the characters didn’t have names.

We would recommend the book to all farmers and jockeys because they enjoy working with horses too.  Thank you Mr Morpurgo for writing such interesting and exciting books.
